Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Who pays for my care @ SPNH? Are there additional costs beyond room and board?
Answer: Costs may be covered by Medicare, MaineCare, private payment, long-term care and other insurances. There may be additional expenses for physicians visits, medications and/or personal items depending on your payment source.
Question: Do you offer private rooms?
Answer: Our rooms are both semi-private and triples, all with adjoining bathrooms. We encourage you to bring personal items from home to make your room as comfortable and familiar as possible. You may bring such items as pieces of furniture, pictures for the walls, or your favorite comfortable quilt. We will work with you to make your room as much like home as possible. All rooms have telephone and cable access.
Question: How is the food?
Answer: Excellent! In addition to our 3 meals a day, we offer snacks, special breakfasts, BBQs, food-related activities and more. We have an experienced cooking staff who cater to each resident's nutritional needs. All menus are approved by our Registered Dietician.
Question: Is your facility secured/locked?
Answer: Yes. All exterior doors are equipped with a security system. Access to the outside is gained only through the use of a key pad. We also offer a secured Alzheimer's area.
Question: What is a Goold/Med Assessment?
Answer: The State of Maine requires a comprehensive nursing assessment on all individuals considering nursing home placement to determine the level of care needed. Goold Health Systems conducts these assessments. Goold has a list of medical criteria that must be met in order to qualify for nursing home admission.
Question: How often do doctors have to visit?
Answer: All residents must be under the care of a physician. The schedule of a physician's visits is determined by the resident's condition and also by the requirements of Medicare, MaineCare or Insurance Companies. Physicians are available 24/7 for emergency care.
Question: What is your staff-to-patient ratio? How often do you use agency staff?
Answer: SPNH's staffing ratio is 1:5 on the 7-3 shift, 1:10 on the 3-11 shift, and 1:15 on the 11-7 shift. Agency staff is used only if we are unable to meet these ratios with our own staff. There are licensed staff on duty 24 hours a day.
Question: Are residents dressed daily?
Answer: Yes. All residents are up and out of bed, bathed, and dressed daily. They are encouraged to eat in our dining room, and to participate in the activity program. Family, friends, and visitors are encouraged to visit at their leisure. Well-mannered pets are welcome to visit.
